James “Jimi” Powers Obituary, South Philadelphia Death: Beloved Resident Has Passed Away

With profound sadness, family, friends, and members of the South Philadelphia community are mourning the passing of James J. Powers, affectionately known as “Jimi,” who passed away peacefully on July 11, 2026. Born on October 3, 1965, Jimi lived a life defined by compassion, loyalty, generosity, and an unwavering love for the people closest to him.

A lifelong resident of South Philadelphia, Jimi was known as a warm and caring individual whose presence brought comfort and happiness to those around him. He was the beloved son of the late Robert T. and Joan Powers, and throughout his life he carried forward the values of family, friendship, and kindness that shaped the person he became.

Jimi dedicated many years of his professional life to the Philadelphia Inquirer, where he was respected by colleagues and built meaningful friendships that lasted beyond the workplace. Those who worked alongside him remember him not only for his commitment and reliability but also for the genuine connections he formed with the people around him.

Family was the greatest source of joy and pride in Jimi’s life. He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Gracie, and a loving father to his daughter, Faith (John) Fanelli. His role as a grandfather brought him immense happiness, and he was affectionately known as “Pop Pop” to his grandson, Gianni Fanelli, with whom he shared a special bond that will forever be cherished.

Those who knew Jimi describe him as someone with an extraordinary heart. His kindness, generosity, and ability to make others feel valued were qualities that stood out throughout his life. Friends and family often reflected on his willingness to offer support, encouragement, and love whenever it was needed. His caring nature left an unforgettable mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Beyond his immediate family, Jimi maintained strong relationships with siblings, extended relatives, and lifelong friends. He is survived by his brothers Thomas (Marlene), Joseph (Maria), William (Annette), and Steven; his sister Tara (Gary) Amato; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and dear friends who will continue to honor his memory. He was preceded in death by his brother Robert Jr. (Tracy), along with other loved ones who remain forever remembered.

The loss of Jimi has brought deep sorrow to those who loved him, but his family finds comfort in the many memories created throughout his life. His laughter, kindness, and devotion to others will continue to serve as a reminder of the remarkable person he was.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Jimi’s viewing on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at St. Rita of Cascia Church, located at 1166 S. Broad Street, Philadelphia. A Funeral Mass will follow at 10:00 a.m., with interment afterward at SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery.

In honor of Jimi’s memory, the family has requested that donations be made in his name to the Abramson Cancer Center, 3535 Market Street, Suite 750, Philadelphia, PA 19104, in lieu of flowers.
